To be precise Shadow wasn’t aware of the goddess of ruin and despair until he witnessed one of his suppose to be victims were killed by having his soul sucked out.
She revealed herself to be the goddess of ruin and despair without Shadow knowing.
Though Shadow assumed the only way to fix what he did to Knuckles was to get him to fall in love with this goddess however; it would be more challenging.
Cause Surge tells him the story of Sondra and it was was so sad,
Sondra was once an ordinary woman in Greece times so beautiful and so kind. When she fell in love with a man that only loved her beauty he charmed her easily. But that love didn’t last long. He constantly cheated on Sondra and when he didn’t stop cheating even when she caught him more than 10 times her heart shatters more and more.
After humiliated by the man she thought loved her, she was alone at the temple of Zeus crying and heart broken. Then, hatred and anger consumed her while what’s left of her heart withered. She begged the goddess Persephone and the god Hades to give her the power to punish the man who broke her heart and her wish was granted. She became a new goddess and punished the man who shattered her. Only after that she discovered that combining the powers of Persephone and Hades have made her what she is to punish those who are unfaithful and over the years she continued her work making the unfaithful perish and she never stopped. She never had a true love and she doesn’t care.
Shadow was shocked at this and he asked his servant how would she possibly fool them.
