          "Can I see?" he asked, almost too casually. My first instinct was to snap it shut, guard it like a secret. But something in his tone, it was gentle, unassuming. Something made me slide it toward him instead.
          
          He flipped a few pages, eyes scanning the scribbled lines. His brow furrowed, then smoothed. "This one," he said, pointing at a half-finished verse I'd been ready to cross out, "it's good. You should keep it." Heat crept into my cheeks. "You think so?"
          
          He nodded, sure, like it wasn't even up for debate. "Yeah. You've got something there."
