I've been travelling for over 30 years, most of it alone and off the main tourist track. I've been to over 60 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and North America. One of the aims of my writing, is to reach out to other women, and take the fear out of solo travel, because not only is it enjoyable, but empowering and transformative.

I am passionate about social justice, and a feminist who cares deeply about the lives of women, especially in the developing world. This is evident in my travel writing, as I immerse myself into a culture, seeking to expose a different side to a location and highlight real life experience for women, behind the scenes.

During my travels, I always attempt to speak to women to learn how they are treated by men and society, also observing daily interactions and patterns. This is especially important in the developing world, where manifestations of gender based violence, are less well know and the economic position of women along with cultural expectations, makes it is almost impossible for her leave.

By engaging with a woman, it is probably the first time anyone has show any interest in her life and indeed her opinions. Interest in another women can also be empowering, as she is listened to, believed and shown empathy.

Millions of women merely exist to cater to the needs of the men in their often extended families, failing to even identify their own needs. Stuck within a cultural framework that hosts specific belief systems, religions and traditions, inter-playing to ensure women remain the property of men.

By reading my stories, I hope it helps you to learn the ways that violence against women manifest and remain ingrained in cultures around the world.
