Writing character interactions always feel difficult; Who are these individuals, what do they want, how do they talk, what do they talk about?
My rule of thumb is this: Writing is a potentially limitless art form, but there are clear limitations on presentation and on how to convey it. So I always write with that in mind and aim to create catharsis with my dialogue. Often times the words get blurred together, or the exposition/dialogue is a little too heavy handed, or the subtlety is too nuanced. But because of that, good writing shines through as a good juxtaposition. It’s a balancing act, not all dialogue should be poetry, and not all dialogue should feel like a script, but it should always feel a little like both. At least, that’s what this opinionated, amateur, writer thinks.
