          Iceland 1978. A dead body is discovered in a body of water in the middle of a lava field. Commissioner Erlendur and Marian Briem launch an investigation. A trail leads to the nearby US military base, where nobody seems willing to cooperate with the Icelandic police.
          Could a military secret have been the victim's undoing?
          In addition to the current case, Erlendur is preoccupied with the unsolved disappearance of a girl over twenty years ago, who had passed the notorious Camp Knox on her way to school. He investigates this case on his own initiative.
