RHYS spent three years within the volunteer fire service before he joined the defence force as an emergency responder at age 22 , where he later joined the army and specialised as an infantry soldier .
despite his average height , rhys earned the callsign ' runt ' with being the smallest of the men in his taskforce , and was often referred to as their guard dog , as he was fiercely loyal , and the first to defend any of his peers .
