Once upon a time, I knew a girl named Maureen. She was not a nice girl but she was my best friend. She learned how to shoplift at a young age and stole things from my bedroom. I don't know why we were friends, we just were. I had a boyfriend named Jim and Maureeen fell for a boy named Tom. Tom was rough and rude and unlikeable, but Maureen loved him. He started hanging out at her house and she thought he loved her. Then her mom got pregnant. The baby looked exactly like Tom. This upset Maureen. She confronted her mom and her mom had Tom beat her up. They left her in the hospital with no name. And she went to foster care. Mom's Boyfriend is Maureen's story. Names are changed and the story fictionalized but basically it's a true story. I dedicate it to my friend Maureen who passed away about 8 years ago. It took her a long time to find me again but she did shortly before she passed. Our reconnection lasted long enough for her to fill in the missing years. I thought of her always and wondered what happened to her. And so I wrote Mom's Boyfriend to tell her story and the emotion of losing her love to a selfish mother. It is a story I felt must be told. If you are reading, thank you.
