I was born of this sea, and from it I saw a star-gleaming like burning quartz.
I cannot say if it danced near Centauri or Sirius,
but it shone with a brilliance my eyes had never known.
By the shore, my gardenia gazed into the night's abyss,
wondering if your eyes had ever fallen short of the moon's grace-
the natural reflection of your ocean-deep gaze.
My gardenia loved you through every night,
every day,
every dusk,
until at last, the ocean, in despair,
returned her love in waves of longing.
