Dear @MargaretAtwood,
I recently started writing a story called The Wife’s Tale. I wanted to share it here because this story is mainly my little personal love letter to your work.
What has always struck me most about The Handmaid’s Tale is not only the horror of Gilead itself, but the precision with which you explore women’s condition, political indoctrination, gendered rules, domestic power, silence, fear, and the way oppression can enter even the most intimate parts of life.
Through my main character, Madeleine Harrington, I wanted to explore Gilead from inside a Commander’s household, not only through visible violence with a Handmaid, but through appearances and internalized obedience. I wanted to write about a woman who seems to belong to that world. Even if, well, I had to do something after some time writing her.
Your work has deeply shaped the way I think about us women, power, language, control, and resistance. The Wife’s Tale is my attempt to honor that complexity while creating my own character and emotional perspective within this universe.
If one day you, or fans of The Handmaid’s Tale are interested, I would be truly honored to discuss it with any of you !! <3
Thank you for creating a world that continues to haunt, and inspire so many of us !
