Today marks the third year of me posting The Knights Himura on Wattpad, as well as the second year of me posting it on Royal Road.
Having started writing for myself back in June of 2017, this also makes it the fifth year of me writing in general.
2022 is one of my most important years ever as a writer, and realizing just how long I've been writing has been sobering. A quarter of my life has been dedicated to The Knights Himura alone, and I don't think I'd re-do any of it.
I'm sorry for neglecting any fans of mine who're still on Wattpad, I'll get back to you soon enough. For now, I continue marching forward, so I can come back and post something more meaningful here in the coming months.
Thanks for sticking around and thanks for hearing me out.

@MarikoRawralton I had to take my story from RoyalRoad due to the toxicity, but glad that you're still persisting.

And I don't think there's anything wrong with spending lots of time on writing. Better than just daydreaming about writing which unfortunately happens among some people.

I have posted the first and second chapters of "Tsukiko's Belonging" onto Royal Road. It's a continuation of The Knights Himura.
I'll be posting the story there first, then posting it here just as an archival spot. Unfortunately, Wattpad doesn't have the same Volumes feature that RR has, so there's little incentive to post it here, I'm sorry.
          Thank you.

MarikoRawralton

@CitizenSamurai I hate to keep it off WP cuz I still have readers and followers here, but unfortunately, I'd probably get MURDERED by the algorithm again. I am totally planning to post it here eventually, but it's probably gonna be more of an archival thing cuz I expect this site to be more reliable in the long run than RR.

Have you moved onto another site yourself? I noticed the audiobooks and new chapters, but I haven't had a chance to keep up, life getting in the way and all that.

@MarikoRawralton I just saw this! Congratulations Mariko! I'm excited to hear the characters you've created in "Knights Himura" have filled one story and are moving on to new territory.

I'm noticing more writers who (like me) are using Wattpad like a laboratory to get things off the ground - and then finding niche sites to put those same stories up. Here's to you! J

I've been advised that Wattpad (and Viacom) might start mining stories for movie optioning and such, which greatly concerns me.

It seems WP is becoming a larger and larger corporate entity that seems more concerned in finding a new marketable IP than helping its authors.

I've been told deleting my story might be the best way to avoid any theoretical future IP theft or something like that. While I personally doubt that'll happen, I'm gonna keep a closer eye on the platform from now on.

Whatever happens, you will still be able to find me on Royal Road under the same username.

I wish I could just write without having to even think about these sorts of "politics" and "happenings" but it's an unfortunate consequence of sharing stories in the modern world.

MarikoRawralton

@CitizenSamurai I got lucky by making my story the least marketable thing in the world, but I really do not want some Hollywood hack casing my story for ideas or something. I absolutely hate the idea of it.

I sort of hope they start adapting the bigger WP stories and they start bombing. No offense to the authors here, but it makes me feel like a fish in a barrel when they have literal algorithms looking for whatever they can get. I think they recently did a Hulu movie of that one story with a billion reads and the critics tore into it.

You're right about the remakes and sequels though. It's not as bad as it was in the early 2010s, but hoo boy, it's still as prevalent as ever. I think we're on the seventh Paranormal Activity movie at this point. I mean, for god's sake, they're remaking music now.

I think we should see this as a challenge, to write the riskiest, non-Hollywood stuff so we can earn those subpar film adaptations with hard work, instead of getting it from some desperate producer trying to get a third yacht.

Either way, I'm in no hurry to jump ship yet. This site still has its place, albeit an increasingly smaller place, considering my numbers here are only an eighth of what I've got on RR. I miss the old WP forums too...

I'm... still working on TKH2 and my other story. I'm sort of stuck between a billion little tasks that destroy my focus, and I end up giving myself a headache when I do work. Slow and steady, I suppose.

That, and a large series of coincidences involving the Cocteau Twins has me seriously concerned about my own mental health. You remember that Jim Carrey movie about the number 23? Something like that.

@MarikoRawralton I hope we don't lose you, but each person has to put their work first and that's a decision we can't make for each other.

I'm glad you're still on RR, I check in there once in a while still.

I do wonder sometimes how this platform looks to people who are hungry for new content to produce - I mean, they're remaking / rebooting so much stuff, it really shows you how a large part of what makes Hollywood go is the work of creatives like us. Those high-paid execs are only as good as their last movie, and instead of reaching for original ideas - they see them as risky and unproven - so they (from what I've read / understood, I'm no insider) reach for familiar and safe. Hey, "Trolls" did great - that means we're making "Trolls II". "The Exorcist" has had a few sequels, let's prequel the thing. Whenever you read about pitch meetings, you have to come in armed with a comparison to something that made money: "This is "Mad Max" meets "The Babysitters' Club"!" (I want to see that movie).

Still alive. Still working.

Trying my best to get *something* out soon-ish.

I don't put stuff out 'till I know it's good enough to share, so it'll be later than soon, but sooner than later.

Been battling a lot of self-doubt and depression, throwing out over 100,000 words over the past few months.

          Thanks for listening.

@MarikoRawralton Mariko! I'm glad to hear you're keeping up the hard work and staying immersed in this thing we do : ) I'm sorry to hear things have been less than sunny lately - you've got a crowd of people here who think the world of you and I hope things brighten up soon. Reach out any time if you need someone to distract you with stupid stories and chatter about movies or music (that's me : ) ) Take care my friend - J

1.02K!!!

I'll admit I haven't been checking Wattpad as much as I should, but it's still amazing to see my story rack up those numbers.
I'm just about to hit 7K on Royal Road, so over all, good progress! I already have over 1K comments on RR, but WP doesn't seem to let you count comments, unfortunately.

I'm hoping to get TKH2 (working title) out by the end of the year or maybe early next year. I'd put it out chapter by chapter, but I've honestly done so much editing and made so many sweeping changes that I'd never be able to keep a consistent schedule.

After that is Lily's Story, which is a massive, multi-volume surrealist adventure epic set in a world inspired by Pre-WW1 France. You'll know who Lily is if you've read TKH before.

MarikoRawralton

10 reads away from hitting 1k, pretty cool!

I'm still alive, by the way, just working on something that'll take a while.

MarikoRawralton

@CitizenSamurai Thank you, thank you. Good to hear you're still around too! Take care of yourself, the heat's no joke. Even those low 90s can be a silent killer.
Still haven't had the chance to read the last parts of "Humiliation". I should really shackle myself down.
Found out I may been diagnosed with ADHD as a child and never told, which would explain my inability to keep a consistent reading schedule. Need to fight it.

Wow, it's been a while since I'd dropped by and actually taken a decent look at my performance on here.

I've hit over 200 stars (votes? is that what we called them?) and nearly 1000 views on The Knights Himura.

I'm hard at work on two stories at the moment, so it might be a while before you hear from me again, at least in terms of new content. I'll still be editing, but new stories could take a while. Sorry!

I'm more active on Royal Road these days, so if you really want to get in contact with me, try me over there.

MarikoRawralton

It has been a while since I've posted anything on Wattpad. I have been making a few edits to TKH here and there, but no real major posts in the past couple of months.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to justify using this platform. There's very little room to grow. On other sites, I have nearly 5 times as many views and much more consistent interaction.

It feels like Wattpad is a dying platform. The staff is slimy, lazy and purely money driven. I no longer have the loyalty or good will I once had for this site.

I don't write romance or bad boy stories or schlock. A semi-surrealist Tokyo crime drama isn't gonna rock a Hollywood exec's world.

It frustrates me how many talented writers are trapped here. Projects are left abandoned and half finished after new writers lose passion under dwindling support.

Wattpad has become a movie / TV / mainstream media licensing machine with no interest in supporting authors. If you want a chance to have your story made into a Hulu series, this is the place to be.

I am an author. I like to push myself and create interesting worlds and ideas. Wattpad isn't interested in that and that's why I can't in good conscience keep this as my primary platform.

That doesn't mean I am abandoning this place entirely. Future projects WILL come out here on Wattpad, so if this is YOUR platform of choice, I will support you. However, my works will release sooner on RoyalRoad.

I don't think I fit in there either, but I've certainly had a more pleasant experience. I like forums, I like places to talk and leave comments and connect in a professional manner. Best of all, my story is a better fit there than it ever will be here.

If you are interested in the RR version of The Knights Himura, I will leave a link here:

          https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/36142/the-knights-himura

As for future projects, my current one is actually a sequel for TKH. I'll post an update once I have more to share for those who are interested in the series.

MarikoRawralton

@EvighetInvicta Wish I could help you find alternatives, but I don't know that many myself. I started using Royal Road after a bunch of folks recommended it. It's more suited for hard Fantasy, Sci-Fi and LitRPGs. My story hardly fits in, but it's doing well enough.
Wattpad feels like it's slowly becoming nothing more than a place for Hollywood Execs and Publishers to look around for potential money. They constantly advertise how many movies and TV shows have come from their stories, but I hardly ever hear about the community.
I'd suggest looking around for another place if you're a poet, unless you're already doing well. It's really really hard to get noticed here. I've been here for a year, doing all sorts of odd ends back on the forums and I've still only got like 880 reads. Half of those are comments and reviews.

A buddy of mine already shared this, but I thought I'd share it too. It's been a while since I've done anything on WP, so might as well share something interesting.

          https://www.wattpad.com/story/247957570-speed-dating-books-finding-your-next-favorite-book

"Speed dating" means you get the first couple of paragraphs to let yourself get hooked. No blurbs, no focus on fancy covers, just those precious first impressions.

You know what they ssay about first impressions, right?

It's a great concept and it benefits both readers and authors. Win-win!

PS: I'd @ the buddy and the author of the speed dating book, but WP's being finicky.

Happy Halloween!

I don't have much planned, sorry. If you haven't noticed, The Knights Himura just finished another editing pass. Already finding new problems, so expect another pass soon.

I'm still hard at work on my two side projects. They're coming along. They SHOULD be out sooner, rather than later.
