Ursula’s introduction is brilliantly unsettling because the chapter refuses to make her frightening immediately. We first see an eighty-two-year-old grandmother preparing Fernando’s favorite crispy pork belly, remembering the tiny domestic pleasure of hearing him say, “Grandma, today it’s perfect.” Then we learn about the inheritance war, her son’s death, the destroyed photographs and burned calendars, and finally the terrible sentence that she gave Fernando “everything, even the wrong things.” By the time she calmly asks whether her grandson will be home late, the reader understands that her tenderness and her ruthlessness come from exactly the same place.
