you’re stumbling through a heavily wooded forest. it’s dark, and nearly impossible to see; the above leaves block out any light the moon gives off.
your foot catches on a tree root. you stumble, falling to the ground with an involuntary yelp that’s drowned out by the violent snapping of foliage as you collide with them.
groaning, you prop yourself up on your elbows. you try to stand, but a sharp pain shoots up your ankle. hissing in pain, you slowly lower yourself back to the ground. you’ve resigned to your fate; you can’t run any longer.
light footfalls catch your ears as i come up behind you. you curse under your breath, rolling onto your back in order to face me. i kneel down at your feet, smiling a smile that doesn’t quite reach my eyes.
“hey,” i say, grabbing your uninjured ankle with a surprisingly tight grip as you try to shuffle away. you start hyperventilating as i lean down closer to you, my face just inches from your own.
