Being a fanfic writer for the MJ community is different from most other fandoms because we aren't a "trendy" fandom to be apart of. Compared to 1D (or derivatives of) community or KPop or anything else trending right now, we're definitely in the minority. You genuinely have to enjoy writing and want to get your story out there to remain motivated. The chances of a story getting more than 2k reads, votes, and comments across the board would be near impossible (but ofc I can always be proven wrong).

Sometimes u just gotta let the story motivate you and people will come on their own. Slowly, but they'll come.

@ ThrillerGal yeah totally. I mean combine smut with a great writing style and a good plot and that's like the secret recipe to over 10K reads. But yeah true every fandom has its favourite genre that's normal its just unfortunate for those who cone with unique ideas and they get discouraged, you know?

@MemorableMichael This is true but in every fandom there are always going to be the "popular fics" that follow a certain formula of what is in-demand for that fandom that will succeed over others. Like @Starlightgirl54 said, erotica/smut are very popular in this fandom and have been since I first started writing almost ten years ago. I've known the experience of your fic getting paid dust because you don't write smut. I have written in the 1D fandom and they are definitely more focused on plot/character driven stories rather than the smut our fandom is obsessed with. It can be discouraging and almost feel as if you're being punished if you fail to adhere to a certain trend but eventually your writing will get the appreciation it deserves.

@ MemorableMichael couldn't agree more. But I have to say tho, there is a popular genre in the fandom: sexual content and smut. Stories that aren't about that get less attention I often notice. They have less reads which I find unfortunate. Because many are gems. But I think its popular because of the instant action, it doesn't have to build up to a certain moment.

May anyone recommend MJ fanfics that aren't love stories please? Or if they are, the romance is just a subplot and there's something bigger at hand?

@ MemorableMichael no problem:))

Remember when Wattpad used to be full of role players? thinking abt it now it's kinda weird we had RPs on a reading website lol, but it was still fun. Some were really good.

ThrillerGal

@daddiescum Chille, the MJfiction of today is not the same as the pre roleplay era. So many great writers and fics left because of that mess.

@MemorableMichael It was sooo creepy. The rp accounts here don't really bother me though, probably because I can't really see what they're talking about.

@ThrillerGal I remember someone on Twitter was saying that an MJ RP was harrassing them like a few years ago and that's so creepy.
