Hey Guys,
"It happened ten years ago, on a Saturday morning, back when I still knew nothing about the world. My mother opened the door to two police officers. They didn’t say a word, just nodded. And she—as if her legs had been kicked out from under her by an invisible force—collapsed to her knees in the hallway.
I stood at the top of the stairs, in pajamas, sleepy, messy-haired, thinking about the new video game I wanted to try that day. And right there, on that messed-up morning, my childhood ended.
There were no comforting words, no goodbyes. Only silence. My father had died in the line of duty. Shot. Just like that, during a drug raid in a basement somewhere in the Bronx. The shooter was some kid with a gun—maybe my age back then, maybe the same age as the one who had just taken my watch.
Before that, I rebelled against everything: rules, teachers, homework. I didn’t care about anything. I mouthed off to everyone, even to my dad. He just laughed, ruffled my hair, brought me a donut, and said, “You’ll grow out of it, kid.”
But I never grew out of him not coming home."
