This might ruffle some feathers, but it’s something I’ve been meaning to say for a while now.
Dark romance used to feel rare. Like something intense, deep, emotional — something that wasn’t for everyone. It had a certain edge, a certain weight that made it special. It wasn’t just about obsession or toxicity — it was about pain, healing, twisted love, and emotional chaos that actually made sense.
But now? I feel like the genre is being overused and misused, especially here in the Indian Wattpad scene.
These days, “dark romance” is being thrown into every single story. Even when there’s no real darkness. Just because it sounds trendy. Just because it might get more views, more votes, more hype.
And I’ll be honest — it’s ruining the essence of what dark romance truly is.
Dark romance isn’t just:
✖️ A possessive guy who growls “you’re mine” every 3 chapters
✖️ Random trauma slapped on without depth
✖️ Toxic behavior romanticized without consequences
Where’s the emotional layering? Where’s the moral dilemma? Where’s the storytelling?
I’ve read both Indian and international dark romance — and let me tell you, international authors get it. They dive deep into the psychology, the pain, the obsession. The darkness feels real. There’s purpose behind it.
Meanwhile, here, some writers are just using the label for drama. And it’s heartbreaking because we have SO much talent — but instead of pushing boundaries, we’re chasing trends.
I miss when dark romance actually meant something. When it left you feeling wrecked, haunted, and strangely understood.
So yeah — this is just me putting it out there. I’m not calling out anyone specific. But I hope we remember that genres aren’t just aesthetics. They have soul. And dark romance, especially, deserves more than being reduced to a buzzword.
Please don’t ruin the vibe of dark romance.
