The transmission originated from the JSDF liaison office in Tokyo, a secure line to the Alnus command. The voice on the recording was that of a senior staff officer, a man named Colonel Nakano, who had been awake for thirty‑six hours and was not known for his patience.
“—repeat, we need a full assessment of the fleet’s capabilities. Not the preliminary report. We need to know what we are dealing with. These people—this other Japan—they are not like us. They have not gone through what we went through. They have not been tempered by defeat. They are—”
A pause. In the background, someone could be heard shuffling papers, the low murmur of other voices.
“—for lack of a better term, they are the ultimate expression of what Japan could have been. The ultimate Japan.”
The words hung in the air. There was a rustle, as if someone had turned sharply.
“Did you just call them ‘Ultimate Japan’?” another voice asked, this one younger, sharper.
A longer pause. Then Colonel Nakano’s voice again, tired and dismissive.
“It’s just a shorthand. Put it in the file. They need a designation for the briefing materials. ‘Undefeated Japan’ is too long. ‘The Other Japan’ is vague. ‘Ultimate Japan’—it gets the point across.”
“Sir, that’s not an official designation. The political implications—”
“The political implications are that we have a second Japan sitting on the other side of a hole in the ocean with weapons that outclass everything we have. If someone in the Diet wants to complain about the name, they can do it after we figure out how to not start a war. Now get me the assessment.”
The transmission ended.
