I found my way to the field of psychology as an undergraduate student at Howard University in Washington D.C. Human development classes finally put words and theories to all the curiosities I had about human behavior and emotions. Education in my field reinforced my belief that most people are simply longing to be heard and acknowledged. Finally I was able to make a difference for people by blending my interests with my lifelong need to comfort and help people. I continued my formal education in Atlanta, and earned my master's degree in counseling psychology. I have practiced in various therapeutic environments including a women's residential shelter doing individual and family therapy; the hospital setting performing in-patient assessments for multiple major hospitals in Atlanta specifically in their ERs; and as a relationship columnist for a nationally published magazine. Just previous to starting my private practice SCW Psychotherapy LLC, I spent 13 years as the Director of Guidance for a well-respected, private high school.

However, more importantly than any location, over the last 20 years, I have dedicated myself to listening, collaborating, guiding, validating and supporting my clients who have been in need and been brave enough to ask for help. This book is to be a tool of support and encouragement. Positive change is possible; I have witnessed it. Everyone deserves a healthy, happy spirit.
