I know I don't make announcements often, but I am feeling extremely dysphoric right now and it's feeding into my depression big time. I'm actually close to having an anxiety attack over how bad it is. I just- don't expect anything from me right now, please

Friendly reminder: don't flush fish down the toilet or release them into the wild.

Fish that have lived in captivity may carry diseases or parasites that can transfer over to the natural fish in our waters. Some of these parasites can find their ways into a human host.

Fish (such as goldfish, koi, etc.) can take over a natural population of fish. Goldfish can get up to 2 feet long and roughly 4 lbs. They can be invasive.

Even if you know your fish is not diseased and doesn't have parasites, they are still bad to flush. Flushing fish can cause damage to your pipes, and sometimes "dead" fish can seem to reanimate and find their ways into water systems.

The most effective ways to deal with this are to bury dead fish (which may help in the garden), or put them in a plastic bag and throw them in the garbage. Live fish could be euthanized (preferably by a veterinarian, but freezing them may also work), or finding them a new home.

If anyone owns a pet goldfish, aquatic snail, shrimp, or hermit crabs here is a little info on something that's toxic to all of them: copper sulfate.

Copper sulfate is found in all fish food, and is highly toxic to snails, shrimp, and hermit crabs. It is toxic to certain fish species as well including goldfish, trout, and koi. Studies have shown it kills them and takes up to 30 days for them to heal from the effects if they lived.

Fish food companies don't seem to care about our aquatic pets at all. On top of that, goldfish need a high veggie, low protein diet because of their digestive system. What do fish food companies give you? Low to no veggie, high protein. A high protein diet can cause swim bladder disease in goldfish which is essentially trapped gas that makes it so they can breathe and eventually their body shuts down.
