I think the main thing is really enjoying the show and the genre in the first place. Then brainstorm some ideais, like how could your character add to the show and how is she/him/them? Build that main character and a lot will come from that.
I recommend writing scrips of the episodes and plot ahead so keep your own interest as a writer and to help see the journey overall.
