I "get" that your heart was no longer in your story, I understand you had a need to step away. That being said, I fervently hope there wasn't the kind of attacks that I am aware other authors have been subject to. If there was, please accept my condolences and hugs.
You mentioned the story was "a hot mess", but whilst some of the themes weren't entirely comfortable the story fitted in the different milieu you outlined and certainly makes me think you have a writing "voice" that deserves to be heard. Please look after yourself, and if another set of characters and ideas "bites" know that you will have readers. If you set the "bones" of your characters and where you want the story to go, they will take you and your readers somewhere awesome.
