Shinji Ikaris father left him as he found him no use for his work. His own father abandoned him and made Shinji live with his teacher. Though when his father needed him he took Shinji back and made Shinji go threw traumatic experiences.

          Asukas mother won’t look at her. Or listen to her. All her mother talks to and looks at is a doll that she thinks is asuka. Asuka feels like she has to be stronger, independent, rely on herself so she’ll never get hurt again.
          
          Her mother neglected her.
          
          Wouldn’t look at her.
          
          Abandoned her.
          
          My mother did the same.

Shinji Ikari: Saw his mother get absorbed into a giant robot when he was three years old. Had his own father abandon him and was forced to live his grade school teacher for over ten years. Now has to pilot said robot against extraterrestrial beings that look like they came out of a H.P Lovecraft. Feels the pain that the robot feels as well. Tries to do the right thing but everyone yells at him. Works with a emotionless girl with a better emotional relationship with his father than him, a German with a inferiority complex and a alcoholic who has daddy issues of her own and is also a pedophile.
