Though I just did well in a competition, I wonder if the guidelines by which a competition are judged is sufficient. Most competitions judge you on plot, character building and style, however only require the judges to read the first 3-5 chapters. Don't get me wrong, you can tell if you are interested in a book from the first chapter. But for a competition, is five chapters enough to really critique someone's work and compare them to others? I understand that the persons behind the competition want to be inclusive, so they accept a wide range of participants. Therefore can't afford the time to read so many chapters from a book, but what about the amazing books with a slow build? The ones that really get going in chapter 6?
Again I think competitions are amazing and do us new writers a huge service. However the rules or criteria could he adjusted. Let me know what you think please. ❤️
