Day 5 -
why Gryffindor one hundred percent deserved the house cup in 1991 (Harry's first year at Hogwarts)
so, i've seen a lot of people posting memes and stuff about how the house cup was completely rigged and Dumbledore just kind of stole Slytherin's win in Harry's first year. everytime i read a post like that, i get so irritated because Gryffindor really did deserve that win.
basically, we learn from Percy Weasley at the beginning of the book that Slytherin had won the house cup for seven years in a row, which means straight from 1984 - 1990. yeah, that's great and all for Slytherin, but i wondered why that was the case. i mean Slytherins are smart and they don't really get caught causing mischief, but that couldn't be the only reason.
and then i realised. SEVERUS SNAPE was the head of their house. now, i don't care what opinion you have of Snape, but he was completely biased when it came to his classes. he would constantly bully the Gryffindors, and favour the Slytherins, and if he was anything like that in the previous years too (which is very likely) the other houses at Hogwarts didn't stand a chance.
in fact, i don't think i've read a single scene in the books where Snape awards points to any character that's not a Slytherin. so, Slytherin may have been a great house and the students may have been incredibly talented, but that doesn't change the fact that Snape completely favoured them over other houses and this definitely helped them win.
Now, one might argue that Snape NEEDED to favour the Slytherins to make up for the rest of the teachers hating them, but really throughout the course of the series (with the exception of Moody, who was Crouch at the time) i can't recall a single time any teacher has been unfair to the Slytherins.
