          The  story  begins  at  Holy  Cross  Mission  in  the  remote  village  of  Bolahun ,  Liberia ,  where  I  served  as  a  Peace  Corps  teacher .  
          
          My  experiences  in  Africa  are  woven  into  the  narrative ,  and  real  people  have  inspired  my  characters .
