One of the major obstacles in mental maturation is the recognition that “I may be wrong.”

How easily the modern world’s mind enters a vicious circle.

Stress is energetically demanding, and lack of energy creates all the more stress, which leads to a state of “tired but wired.”

If stress is long-lasting, the body perceives the situation as life-threatening, and the biological fear of death can trigger an extreme sympathetic reaction – that is anxiety – hoping for a solution in a state of hypervigilance. If we do not pay attention, this can escalate into panic attacks.

On the other hand, if our energy levels are low, either primarily from fatigue or depleted by stress, the body no longer searches for a solution and shifts into an extreme parasympathetic reaction – called depression. The body enters deep hibernation, albeit with a terrible mental toll.

Once energy is regained, yet the situation remains unresolved, the body flips back to anxiety. Therefore, we recognize anxio-depressive disorder, as both represent two extreme responses to the same unresolved stress.

Fear is, I believe, biologically the most precious emotion. It has helped us survive for hundreds of thousands of years, scanning for danger and reacting with astonishing bodily adaptations in a split second.

Suddenly, it enables us to run faster than we ever imagined or jump over a fence that we would never manage again (a true story of a friend who was chased by a dog).

It is an evolutionary advantage that taught us to predict threats even when they do not exist, based solely on similarities to previous scenarios. Fear is our friend.

          Well... is it really?

When I was giving literally the worst-performed lecture in my life – twice leaving the auditorium to discuss with God what is going on, that I cannot be this utterly blocked, mumbling and actually having no clue what the next sentence will be – the next week my students came to me, saying they had spent the whole week talking about the lecture.

(Oh my... I really screwed up)

That it was one of the best lectures they had attended

(What?! Were you in the same auditorium as me?!).

And they apparently were not making fun of me.

Well. Now choose between the divine and humbleness versus perfection and pride.
