Guys, okay, most of you second me on the Trilogy idea, and I have news: I found a name for the third book! But I had to change the second in the process to fit the whole theme.
Book 1: Scarred
Book 2: Scourged
Book 3: Weathered
If you want to know how I made sense of it, read further.
*slight SPOILERS for books 1 and 2, if you haven't read up to chapter 40*
Book 1: Scarred
The Meaning: Born from old trauma.
The Arc: We enter the story with characters who are already damaged. Simma has her history, Ilyas has his past burdens, and the world itself is recovering from "The Great Collapse." They carry the marks of a previous life. This book is about surviving with the wounds you already have.
Book 2: Scourged
The Meaning: The active crucible.
The Arc: This is the brutal centre of the trilogy. The characters are thrown into the teeth of "The Reaction." It’s the Scavengers, the chips, the mining camp, the whips, the fighting pits, and the systematic attempt by the regime to strip away their humanity. They are actively being beaten down, tested by fire and violence.
Book 3: Weathered
The Meaning: The ultimate survival.
The Arc: To be "weathered" means you have faced the absolute worst storms the world can throw at you, and while you might be worn down, smoothed at the edges, and permanently changed, you are still standing. The rock doesn't break because of the weather; instead, it endures and comes out different. I feel like it implies a quiet triumph. They survived the scourge, and now they are part of the landscape and cannot be removed.
They cut us (Scarred), they tried to break us (Scourged), but we outlasted them (Weathered).
