Oh my lord, have I got something to rant about. In September of 2017, when I first joined Wattpad, I wanted to see what was said about this program on a site called Common Sense Media, which is a forum where websites, books, movies and shows are given ratings for content, such as explicit language, romance and intimacy, as well as ratings for positive messages. However, it seems that the parents writing reviews only see stories about sex, violence, drug use and other things that would make a middle aged Christian suburban soccer mom faint over. For every one positive review, there is maybe six negative ones. Some, I understand, like the ones warning about a ten year old reading a 30 day smut challenge, which is obviously valid, but many of the parents don't realize that a thirteen year old should be emotionally capable of reading about a teenage couple, and realizing what they read is fiction. There is also many claims that there are stories supporting drug use, assault and self-harm, when, if there is a story with those things there should be trigger warnings, and I highly doubt Wattpad would allow a story promoting drugs or self inflicted violence to stay published. Please tell me I am not alone in feeling like Wattpad can and is a creative, wonderful environment for people to feel safe and share their writings.
