3rd ANECDOTE

I used to work late in a small library. Every evening, just before closing, I’d walk through the aisles to make sure no one was left inside.

One night, I heard someone whisper, “Excuse me.”

An elderly woman stood between two shelves.

“I think I lost my grandson,” she said.

I offered to help and searched every floor. The building was empty. No child. When I came back, the woman was gone too.

          I checked the security cameras.

I watched myself walking through the aisles.

          Talking.

          Pointing.

          Waiting.

But there was no woman beside me.

Thinking the cameras had glitched, I laughed it off.

The next evening, my manager asked why I’d stayed so long after closing.

I told him about the woman looking for her grandson.

          His face went completely blank.

He quietly opened an old newspaper clipping that hung in his office.

It showed a black-and-white photo of the same woman.

          The headline read:

“Grandmother Dies Searching Library for Missing Grandson.”

          The article was dated 1978.

I looked back at the photo.

She was wearing the same coat.

          The same scarf.

          The same sad smile.

I handed the newspaper back without saying a word.

As I turned to leave, my manager stopped me.

          “I forgot to ask…”

          He looked genuinely confused.

          “When she spoke to you…”

          ”…did she finally find him?”
