Sometimes I like giving ChatGPT some random scenarios for stories I'm making to maybe get ideas. Today I did one with a reader in Sonic's world. The reader had the power to grab anything out of nowhere, like reaching under the table and grabbing a whole minigun for some reason.
          
          I shit you not, the AI made him grab Sonic's diary and it referenced the SonicxShadow ship. Here it is:

          Eggman ignored her, flipping the pages. “Let’s see what kind of embarrassing garbage the hedgehog—”
          
          He paused.
          
          The room went silent again.
          
          Eggman squinted at the handwriting.
          
          Then slowly, he turned the book around, revealing a page with a crudely drawn doodle of Sonic holding hands with Shadow.
          
          At the top, in big, bold letters:
          
          “SHADIC WEDDING AU!!!”
          
          Eggman lost it. “PFFFT—!!” He laughed so hard he had to hold onto the desk for support. Metal Sonic walked away to process life. Orbot and Cubot high-fived.

          SINCE WHEN WAS THIS A THING?!

I'm going into a topic that I feel should be discussed more often. People that make their main character insert just another character for liking said character or just for their powers/backstory.
          
          Take Sonic, for example. Most Sonic stories are not even in Sonic's world, but just a reader that is literally Sonic in other series. Or Sans, there are a bunch of Sans reader stories out there. It's either that or just son of [INSERT MALE CHARACTER HERE] and [INSERT FEMALE CHARACTER HERE] for the sake of having both character's abilities mashed into one.
          
          What I'm trying to say is, why make your insert THAT exact character? Why not just make them inspired by the character, with similar powers, a similar personality, etc. Then you can even change the lore and have excuse to add more to the kit without someone going "Oh but they can't do this and that". Take a Y/N who can run like Sonic, but instead of being a carbon copy of the bloke, add your own twist to the personality, likes and dislikes. It's easy.
          
          That's why I find stories that give their inserts powers based on fandoms rather than characters so interesting. For example, a guy who can place blocks like Minecraft, or someone who can just plant seeds that sprout PVZ plants in an instant. Or even someone who can heal people like the Medic from TF2 and even Ubercharge them. That's fun AND interesting! Not when it's just another Spiderman!Reader with nothing new to add.
          
          Speaking of Spiderman readers, for all you people who write that, you do know there are many spider people, right? Why make a Peter Parker replacement with the same story when you can create your own spider person? And no, giving them a symbiote doesn't count.
          
          Fanfiction is writing whatever you want, blah blah blah, I've said that before a thousand times, but there's a little thing called plagiarism. Look it up. It's why I make my reader inserts their own people despite thinking a Worker Drone reader would be cool to see in Ben 10 as an alien species.
