Hey I have an important question related to writing. Do you think it's okay to base a character off of someone you know in real life? I'm not doing it intentionally, but I have this one character who's getting dangerously similar to a person I know who had a similar role in my own life. There's a chance that this person may read this, so I want a few opinions.

I should also mention that the ways in which this person and the character are similar is mostly due to their mental health issues. I'm afraid that I'll hurt this person by including a specific conversation that's used to frame a different character in a bad way, because it'll likely bring up bad memories.

Idk. I might be overthinking this. It's just that what I want to include for the sake of the story is heavily influenced by a triggering moment from my life and somebody else's life.

@QueenieCalista all of my characters are based off of people who i know, just with slight differences. i think its fine to do it.

@LilMissScribbles that's a good point. I think my approach is to divid the similarities between two characters so that it's not all pinned on one... it's just such a specific exchange of dialogue that I know the irl person will recognize even if it's not the exact wording

@QueenieCalista My opinion is that, if you’re not purposely doing it, then I wouldn’t snap at you for it, but this seems it’s making you uncomfortable. Now, if it was only that both the person and your character had brown eyes and black shoes, that would be something else—but if your gut says this mental-health-similarities deal isn’t a good thing, maybe just step back a bit. Perhaps, if the character has a similar experience to the real person, make the character take it differently—such as being angry instead of sad, or cold and snappish instead of vulnerable.

What do you call the feeling when you're supposed to be happy but all you want to do is cry? I even wrote a song about it but I still don't know what the emotion is lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DQ7cOARSjs

@QueenieCalista Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you that you never change, even when everything around me is changing and unpredictable. (Hebrews 13:8) Thank you that you are stable, even when I feel so very unstable. (Isaiah 33:6) It feels like Satan has been whipping me around! Please sustain me, protect me, and enable me to stand.
