Sara frowned. "Hawthorne Airfield? That place has been shut down for fifteen years. What're you doing there?"
"Tracking some suspicious activity," Leon answered. "It looks like the airfield is being used to launch something besides aircrafts."
Sara's nerves tingled. "Are we talking bioterrorist activity?"
"Can't swear by it, but I have my suspicions. I'd rather not discuss it on the phone, but I'd really appreciate it if you could be my extra eyes and ears to check things out."
"Well, yeah, of course," Sara answered instantly. "Just, uh… just give me forty-five minutes. Please be careful, okay?"
"I'll be fine, Sara," Leon said. She could hear a smile in his softened tone. "There's no danger. Shoot me a text when you get here."
"Will do."
Leon disconnected without further remark, leaving Sara mystified and somewhat apprehensive. She brushed her concern aside and proceeded to ready herself, equipping her gun as she sprinted out the door.
Twenty minutes later, Sara pulled onto the open landscape of Hawthorne Airfield. She exited her car and looked around.
The airfield was deserted as far as the eye could see. The forgotten edifices stood lonely and dark, half hidden behind overgrown weeds and moss. There was no sign of Leon or his car.
Sara drew her phone and texted him.
"I just got here. Where are you? I don't even see your car. Are you okay?"
Leon's response was prompt and brief.
"Sit tight, sweetheart. I'm on my way."
