What if.. when the gems came to earth, they were surprised that humans had put their children into lable based on their physical body. They were shook.
Until Steven was 9 or 10, the gems and greg called Steven by they/them pronouns.
When he turned 9 or 10 they asked him what pronouns he preferred. He said he/him.
Unknown to steven, he had been born with a female body.
The gems never told him that the type of body he had was considered she/her to majority of humans.
When Steven turns 16 or 17, his physical body gender becomes obvious to the people of beach city. They become confused.
Lars and Sadie confront Steven about it.
