Fifteen year old Charlie Fray lives a normal life in Brooklyn with her parents, Jace and Clary- a musician and an artist. She's never heard of demons, runes, or the Shadow World. But everything changes the night she sees a group of strange teenagers outside Java Jones: a blue-skinned boy, a girl and guy with glowing tattoos, and a half-wolf hybrid.
When her home is attacked by demons, Charlie is thrown into a world she never knew existed. Her parents are Shadowhunters- warriors sworn to protect humans from demons- and they've been hiding from a dangerous man named Thorn, a rogue Inquisitor who idolizes Valentine Morgenstern and Horace Dearborn's ideas and believes in Shadowhunter supremacy and wants to erase Downworlder rights.
Now her parents are missing, and Charlie is forced to trust the very people she saw through the café window: Max and Rafe Lightwood-Bane, Anna Lovelace, and Kyle Velazquez. Together, they must uncover the truth, find Jace and Clary, and stop Thorn before he tears the Shadow World apart.
But as secrets unravel and feelings grow, Charlie finds herself caught between two boys- and a legacy she never asked for.
