          He was the painter
          
          all brushstrokes and brilliance,
          
          and I, the canvas
          
          he never chose.
          
          
          
          I stretched myself wide,
          
          blank with longing,
          
          craving even a careless color,
          
          a glance, a line
          
          anything.
          
          
          
          But he passed by,
          
          palette full of feelings
          
          meant for someone else.
          
          
          
          So I stayed bare,
          
          silent, still,
          
          gathering dust
          
          instead of pigment.
          
          
          
          Now the studio's closed,
          
          and he is gone
          
          left no trace,
          
          not even a smudge
          
          to say I mattered.
          
          
          
          And yet I remain,
          
          empty but whole,
          
          a ghost of a painting
          
          that never became.
