LOL guys, I totally just ranted in a group discussion about how towrite a female character because I read an article that really changed my views about it.
Here it is!
I really want to hear your views on this because I know that there is a lot of argument over this topic. Most people think that great female leads need to be tough, badass, and really good looking, but this controversial idea has been shoved upon writers for ages because it is pleasing to the male readers in the fictional male dominated universe. The concept can become tiring because it seems like almost all female characters are made with these specific traits in mind. The problem here is that being "badass" comes off as very masculine. Yes, it is perfectly fine to have a masculine female character, but the best characters provide a mix of feminine and masculine traits. She should be badass, but also kind. Tough, but also insecure.
The other issue is that in a lot of male dominant universes (DC for example), there is little to no diversity in female characters! Diversity among characters is the most important because it draws in different kinds of readers! No matter how many hot blondes exist, if they're all the same, readers won't be personally interested.
Back on the subject of looks: EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER MUST HAVE A FLAW. Most people enjoy good looking characters, but making them absolutely perfect doesn't help the reader to relate in any way. Also, that character shouldn't be good looking just for the fun of it. That implies that this is just the desire of the author. The character should be able to use their look for some purpose, whether that be seduction, espionage, disguise, etc. Remember, the characters dress themselves. It defines a major part of who they are.
Anyways, please comment your views on writing female characters. This group discussion will hopefully lead to better writing in the future.
