I remembered a conversation today. It is about a friend talking about someone they know at their school. It turns out that someone he thought that the United States and America are two completely countries. They also believe that Canada was part of the country America. My friend, she asked me to confirm for they got confused too on the countries and continents.
It was a mess, my good friend she had to talk this over with that person by text. It was hilarious to see the reactions for the realization from him. I will present it in text format the best my memory can remember.
Some Joe: hey Canada is part of America right?
Friend: what no it is not part of the United States.
Some Joe: isn’t that a different country? The United States is in South America.
(After me explaining the proper geography. The guy is in is in World History class and it has a map.)
Friend: Boi you dummy the United States and America are the same place!
Some Joe: Really?! Then Canada is part of South America?
Friend: NO! You silly goof! Canada is a country on its own! It is part of the continent North America!
Some Joe: Oooooooh! Wait, North America? Hold on let me look at the map.
Friend: ARE YOU KIDDING ME! WHY ARE YOU ASKING ME WHEN THERE IS A MAP IN YOUR CLASS???!!!!!!
Some Joe: I didn’t know the United States and America are the same place. And I didn’t know there was a map in here.
Friend: You got to be joking. Man this is too much for me to handle.
I understood why there was a misunderstanding. There is a lot of terms that have the word America, but to have never heard of the second name of the country they are living in. It was a good laugh after that.
