If there was a moment I could avoid at all costs at that point, it would have been in that instance. Never would I have anticipated meeting the woman that had won over the biggest jackass I’d ever met - the woman who’d won the man I'd fallen so hard for - over me. And up until that point, I’d convinced myself that maybe, just maybe she wasn’t real. That perhaps Tom had bluffed in an attempt to make me jealous - something similar to what I’d done with Oliver at the bar. But as I soaked in the slender young woman before me with bronzed skin and delicate facial features, reality hit hard. She was real. And I was pathetic.
“Who is she?”
Her voice, a light sound - if not a bit terse, cut through the silence between the three of us. Her gaze shifted from mine up to Tom’s, and as if on cue, his shoulders slumped downward. His mouth parted only a bit as he appeared to struggle to find something to respond with, and Ria stepped forward at this. She closed the patio door behind her, trapping the warmer air of the apartment inside. Dropping a plastic bag she’d been gripping onto the table beside the empty wine glasses and pack of cigarettes, she cocked her neck towards Tom.
“Well?” she spoke again, voice louder and noticeably more irritated. “Who is she?”
Tom swallowed hard, his brown eyes wide and his arms stiff at his sides. He finally spoke hoarsely, fumbling on his words. “She’s … Anna,” he settled on. “This is Ann - “
“I heard her name!”
I jumped a bit at the sharp bellow that had just been exerted from the small woman standing between me and felt utterly hopeless as I stood watching Tom’s face fall.
