happy b day to me
So I am having a dilemma here. I am currently learning Spanish (I'm still very bad), mostly just for fun, and to communicate with my relatives in Costa Rica. My first problem is I have never learned a second language before and I don't really know the best strategies, techniques, etc. Any tips would be much appreciated. ANYWAY that wasn't even where i was going with this. I'm Chinese, and I would like to learn Mandarin and/or Cantonese, for obvious reasons. But Mandarin and Cantonese are both very difficult languages, and idk if I'd be well equipped to learn either of them, considering I'm barely learning Spanish currently. I would also like to learn Japanese, because its a cool language, and it's difficult, but not as difficult as Chinese, so I thought it would be a good stepping stone. The thing is, I don't know if I want to spend ages learning a language purely for the sake of making another one easier. Do y'all think I should just go for it and learn Mandarin after Spanish, or Japanese first?? Any additional tips for learning a second language would also be very helpful.
@Robinboi wow it's kind of funny we're trying to learn the same languages, I learned English by reading and watching videos. every word I didn't understand I wrote it down and looked up every definition and how to use it, you could do that with Spanish, but I did learn more English in school cuz I am in an international school so everything they teach us here is in English. with mandarin I'm also learning in school, they added that language cuz half of our school is Chinese, and well im learning with a teacher. I haven't figured out HOW to keep learning mandarin on my own. and Japanese I am learning with classes on YouTube. Japanese and mandarin are easier than you think, you just gotta get used to the languages. I DO recommend learning Spanish first and then Japanese so you can pronounce the words easier cuz the pronunciations are VERY similar if not the same. . tips . - watch classes on YouTube as if it was, school, what I mean is that don't drop it cuz you're not gonn learn if you keep dropping it (learned from experience) - have a notebook just for that and take as many notes as possible. - get used to the language, and try to learn the slangs so you can understand the language easier. - don't worry much about pronunciation yet, as long as you know how to form a sentence you're good -practice, constantly, like READ in. the language you wanna learn. that's how I learned English - if you can, and have the opportunity, talk to someone who knows the language well, they'll be able to correct you, and help you with, well, communication (I'm still learning that in english, I talk to some mutuals on discord every once in a while) - and write, a lot if you can, write sentences, paragraphs etc, stories, etc and Learn how the structure of things are in the language, for example like essays, narratives, etc. . . hope this helps
