          A wild dream. Spirals of late night thought guiding him into diving and jumping, chasing rabbits through long grass. Running wild and free and far smaller than he'd ever been before, free and wild and golden in the sun glinting off his fur-
          
          He'd all but pulled himself out of the dream when he'd realised, dragging himself up. That was such a weird thing to realise. It was still dark out, but breaking light over the horizon. With a stretch and a yawn, he did a double take. Hands. No, not hands. Small little paws, padded with rough cushion, layered with golden hair that ran up his arms to thin out near his elbows. A puff of the same fur on his chest. This... how could this happen? What was he? Some kind of weird furry? He reached up to find - floppy ears, long by his neck. A little panic made him pant, and it was at that point that his perturbation became something else entirely. But he couldn't... oh, this really wasnt going great for him.

          Dead again. Falling out of his body through the earth, and rushing in the strained spilling of stars straight back to the beacon point from where he had first hopped into this reality, he brushed himself down. Three snap diamonds coated with lapis on his arm charmed runes, forming into words even as he heard them crackle through his head. The magic objects they'd found over the years had made these pursuits far easier. The bracelets were good, so they could all but type their messages to one another by messing with invisible strings of nothing. The earrings went through his head some days, but it was good to hear their voices. At least now they could warn him of the -
          
          Fuck. He didn't bother trying to break his own fall when he toppled back into the ravine he'd missed. He was really more bored of it by now. Fall damage was old fare. The crunching of his own bones echoing through his head as he fell right past them. The splatter of himself impaled by dripstone, sometimes, or, once, a glockenspiel of pain when he snapped his neck on an amethyst geode. This time was different just for luck of the draw. He seemed to fall forever, and ever, and ever more, past a geode and past a mineshaft, at one point so close to splitting his head on rotten wood that cobwebs held his cheeks. He fell and landed with a plop in water, and, rising to the top in a dungeon, he opted to take an opportunistic route. (1/2)

          He hadn't seen him in a couple of days now. Not that that was horrifying or anything. People came and went. But Dream. Dream had been coming here for years, every day that he did, and even a couple more. It was a casual affair. They met on the way in, they talked their way through easy sets, and grimaced to each other while working through the difficult. A couple of months in, they'd gotten into the habit of finishing off their rounds on the rower. Dream always finished a couple of minutes earlier than him. He was smaller, he supposed, and a beta in his own words, and so he couldn't take nearly as much. Though he always ended up in the showers at the same time, and they'd talk, and walk out together.
          
          Some months ago, they'd gone to breakfast after Saturday training together, and ate in a little cafe he'd picked out. They'd started their Thursday night movie nights around the same time. It was inconsistent. A casual affair. Dream had only come to his house once, after which he seemed to find it much more comfortable to let Sapnap fall asleep draped across his couch, and wake up to the smell of breakfast on a Friday morning. He didn't want to say anything. The summer strawberry feeling he'd started to make in his stomach was destroying him, he knew. But he said nothing at all. Every text he sent him made his heart jump once, but he replied dry as anything.  He rarely texted first. He never really did. It was a weird thing if he would. But today, he texted first. It was boring in that austere-walled prison of his own making without him.

          It had happened so quick and so slow. Time had raced through the gap in the hourglass, spilling frame by frame, grain by grain, into the mound in the bottom. It had slipped through his fingers as he'd grasped to save himself. Dragging it out had only tightened the restraints. Tears had squeezed from his eyes. A whispered yell, all his breath gone. That was when he knew. His heart began to pump in desperation, emptying its last load of oxygen in a last dance around him. All his fear and anxiety poured into a mixing bowl in his stomach and became an overwhelming calm. Tired hands gave up the ghost. There he was. There he wasn't. 
          
          He hadn't been expecting to wake up. He hadn't been expecting, when he woke up, to still be stark naked on a freezing slab, with teeth embedded in his gut. Glaring down, he stared at that bobbing head on his stomach, and for a second it looked like - 
          
          With lips that could scream, he tore a yell from them, kicking at him, sitting right up. 
          
          "What the actual fuck!"
