Bhishma respecting Karna was not in original Mahabharat as far as I know.
There are people who say that he acknowledged Karna on his deathbed but I think it's pure manipulation.
Because if he knew and respected him to prevent all of this he'd have this speech to Duryodhana.
And even in deathbed he always encouraged him to leave Kauravas. If he wanted to stop the war he'd have said this to Duryodhana or Yudhishthira not Karna.
And this is a spoiler don't tell others but yes there's Krishna's influence.
Karna and Kripa being cursed as Chiranjeevi is because these two will wipe out entire generation of Bhrata by themselves. One out of duty and other out of sheer wrath.
Only people of their generation living will be Balarama Krishna and Pandavas. Even Bhishma will be killed. And this bias is necessary.
