The sky above seemed to mirror Swetha’s turmoil, an unrelenting gray stretching across the horizon, a storm waiting to break. The months that had felt like a dream were now unraveling at her feet. Her heart weighed heavy as she stood before Ranjeet, asking the one question that had consumed her thoughts for days. Could what they had truly meant nothing to him?

The silence that followed was suffocating. The weight of it felt like a physical presence, pressing against her chest, threatening to pull her under. Her feet, rooted to the spot, trembled as if the ground beneath her was slowly giving way. Yet, she held on, forcing herself to ask again, her voice barely a whisper. Was it nothing?

Ranjeet’s response came slowly, painfully, like a man who knew the truth but dreaded speaking it. The words stung more than she anticipated, but there was nothing she could do to stop them. I care for you, but love... we haven’t reached there yet.

Her lips parted, but no words came. All she could do was nod. The acknowledgment of what they were—of what they would never be—hung between them. As she turned to leave, she forced a smile, masking the heartbreak that threatened to overwhelm her.

Ranjeet's voice followed her, a quiet whisper in the emptiness. Where are you going?

She didn’t turn back. There was no point in answering.

As she walked away, a new chapter of her life was about to begin—one she never expected, but perhaps the one she needed all along.
