237 years ago today, Lt. Colonel John Laurens of South Carolina was fatally shot by British soldiers on the banks of the Combahee river.
Throughout his life, John Laurens stood by and fought for his beliefs, despite the myriad of comments and backlash he received from his colleagues and family.
Today, on the anniversary of his death, we remember his life and dedication to his cause, both in terms of bringing about American Independence, and in his efforts to try to secure the freedom of slaves.
Thank you, Laurens, for your gallantry, virtue, and rashness. You were far from a perfect man; you were something more inspiring than that. You were a good, wonderfully flawed man, trying to bring about change in a world that so desperately needed it, and that, perhaps, is what makes your story so memorable.
May your restless soul finally be at peace.
