From a young age, I realized that peeling is a curious, yet unsettling thing.
Because once something is peeled, it becomes something else.
I peeled a glistening onion; it made me cry.
I peeled a spiky durian; it tasted so sweet.
I peeled a scab from my wound; it made me bleed.
Peeling changes things, reveals truths, shows what's underneath.
Today, I peeled away a human.
That was terrifying—
And it hurt.
And I learned that peeling is a more than curious and unsettling.
It hurts.
