I just wanna dedicate a short post to Kim Jonghyun, a late member of internationally popular Korean Pop group SHINee. Kim Jonghyun, age 27, died December 18 due to intentional carbon monoxide poisoning. He was suffering from acute depression for a long time, and was very open about it to his fans and the Kpop community in general. Before he died, he left a heartbreaking last message to his sister, saying "It's been hard", "Let me go. Tell me I've worked hard. This is my farewell."
I think that this unfortunate event brings to light the extreme difficulties that Kpop idols have to endure behind the scenes. On the outside, they are very happy and are a facade of makeup and fashion, but there is always a darker side. These idols have poured their entire being into their dreams, and work themselves so hard for what they want. Even with all of the hard work and positive outcomes, they are often treated poorly by a varying multitude of sources, and somehow still manage to keep a smile for the cameras. SHINee Jonghyun had been filming a show for his fans a few days before his death, and he looked perfectly happy.
Let's take this unfortunate event as a chance to remember how hard our idols have worked to get where they are, and that they are, in fact, human. Mental health is important whoever you are. Let's remember that the mean comments that are posted have a high probability of being seen to the ones that they are directed to, whether they were expected to be seen or not. Let's all be careful about the things we write. Although we know that it is not true, sometimes people really do take it to heart.
Here are some beautiful songs by Kim Jonghyun that I've been listening to. We love you; you did well. RIP.
