A raven soared through the open gray sky, and the clouds grew darker due to an impending storm. I could hear the common folk in the next town over bustling around, preparing for the wind and rain. I kneeled on the jagged stone platform, three walls made from the same rock stood around the island. The only open space led into the water, which faced away from the coastline.
The rock island served as a space for Hell’s creatures and had spells on it to keep hidden from all common folk. Souls of a demon’s previous form lay in the stone, along with an object that the demon gave up when they signed their deal with the Devil. I never signed a deal. I never had the choice to give up my soul. The blame for it all rested on my ancestors’ shoulders.
I skimmed my fingers over the eroding rock. The imprint of a snake etched into the top. My family had a lot of pride. Pictures of my ancestors back to the fourteenth century hung on the walls of my old home. Some were paintings while others were photographs. Four pictures stood out from the others. I still recalled them. One man in 1307, one woman in 1505, another woman in 1707, and a second man in 1976. All of them had three things in common: dark hair, a scar stitched tattoo that ran across the face running into the left eye, and a long snake rapped around the left forearm, the head of it lying on the back of the left hand.
Any normal child would have questioned the same tattoo and snake in the four portraits, but I never did. I didn’t because I somehow knew the reason. The last man made a deal with Satan, as did the three before him. The contract stated the demon would die when they were ready-forever can be a long time-if they were willing to sacrifice the next powerful grandchild’s soul. I just happened to be that fifth one, I happened to be the sacrifice from the fourth generation’s contract.
