There was always an option to play with ads. But don't worry, I just checked. You won't get any ads anymore, even if you click it (Maybe a small ad about Sonic Forces, but meh! That's nothing)
However the sad news is, it's temporarily. I heard Sega is gonna entirely remove the game or services related to it (like leaderboard) ༼;´༎ຶ ༎ຶ༽
