I DON'T CARE IF YOU ARE PRO-LIFE (QUITE FRANKLY, PRO-FORCED-DEATH), THE LAW THEY PASSED IN TEXAS IS ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING, IMMORAL, UNCONSTITUTIONAL, AND JUST A BIG "FUCK YOU" TO WOMEN.
For those of you who don't know what it is, allow me to explain.
Roe v Wade gives women the right to have an abortion at least until fetal viability. This is usually around 22-24 weeks. After that, individual states are allowed to choose when/if they want to ban abortion.
Many states have tried to pass bills that restrict women's rights to get abortions far earlier than that. However, because they are unconstitutional and directly go against roe, they are usually shut down in federal courts.
The legislators behind SB4 (senate bill 4, this one) went OUT of their way to evade those boundaries set by roe. Instead of saying that state officials were to enforce this law, they EXPLICITLY left them out. Instead, they deputized private citizens, or really, ANYONE in the WORLD. To sue ANYONE who they think is aiding or abetting an abortion. Abortion clinics, a spouse who knows about the abortion, even an UBER DRIVER. (Good news-- Uber said they'd cover the legal costs and contest it in court, so women can use Uber if they need to get somewhere to get an abortion.) Then, these people can SUE in court for up to 10,000 dollars. So not only are they deputizing them, but they're INCENTIVISING them. Essentially, putting a BOUNTY on people who need abortions. So ANYONE can sue ANYONE. But not only that, you can be sued HUNDREDS of times for the SAME act. There is NO LIMIT.
Now, let's step back a little bit. What exactly does this bill say?

SCOTUS (supreme court of the united states) returned with a 5 to 4 unsigned majority (though it is obvious who they were by the signed dissenters) saying that there was nothing they could do. As aforementioned, you cannot block a bill, you can only block the people who enforce it, but since we cannot figure out who to sue (no state officials, just everyone in the world-- how do you stop that?), the majority said there was nothing they could do about it and that they would let the law go into effect. The dissenters, the liberals, found this absolutely disgusting. (Had RBG still been alive, or had she stepped down early in Obama's presidency and been replaced by a liberal, this vote would have come out differently.) This was discussed in what is called the "shadow docket." Where bills are discussed for a couple of days. The dissenters urged that they treat this bill as a real case in their docket. Months of oral arguments, evidence, lawyers, etc. However, this seems unlikely. Legal officials, even those sympathetic to the aspirations of the dissenters said that this would be hard to do.
So.... what is there left to do?
Well, at this point in time, there are two ways to get the case appealed by the supreme court again for a REAL trial.
The first is that the case that went to the supreme court is being argued in a smaller federal court. Eventually, the outcome of that can be appealed to SCOTUS.
The second way would be if an abortion clinic performed an abortion on a woman after a fetal heartbeat. They would be sued, but they could defend themself in court by saying it's unconstitutional. They'd likely win this case and then it would be appealed up to the supreme court once again. However, we can assume that the supreme court, with its conservative and pro-forced-birth majority, will once again shoot it down.
So yeah. That's where we are right now. Holy fuck.
