GUILT
The screaming behind him didn’t stop. The horrible sound bounced off the walls trying to suffocate him with guilt. He had left his best friend in the hands of the killer and left him to die. If the killer didn’t end his life, then the guilt that was eating away at him would. He was tortured by the screams for a few more minutes and then…
Silence.
As if on cue, he stopped. He didn’t know what was worse, his friends pained screams or the deafening silence that was left after. So many possibilities of what had happened. His friend could have escaped the killer; he could have passed out from blood loss, or he could have died. Shivers ran through his body at the image of his friend laying limp on the ground; his pale skin complexion, his green eyes staring up at the ceiling, the red blood slowly pooling around his lifeless body.
Was there any point in living?
What fate was worse?
Death?
Or having to live with the pain of your friend’s death?
A scream pierced the silence and Percy didn’t realize it had come from his mouth until he had felt the unbearable pain coming from his side. He looked down to see the black handle of a knife protruding from his abdomen. Maybe he should let the killer finish the job, and then he could meet his friend on the other side.
“Please… Just end me.” Was all that he managed to whisper out before he felt the blade of the knife move across his throat. Gurgling sounds filled his ears and the metallic taste of blood erupted in his mouth before everything turned to darkness.
Percy died that night not knowing that his friend had survived the gruesome attack. Guilt had eaten away at him until his very last breath.
