Stabi thoughts #1: I never really understood the point of using random anime images as faceclaims for an "oc" For specification, faceclaiming is commonly defined as taking a photo of a person and claiming their your character (if used as art references for body type I don't see much of a problem but it still is pretty weird to me) Not targeting anyone specifically since I see it around a lot, but it seems most prominent in roleplay books whatnot It's just, the image isn't your oc? At least ask the artist for permission to use their work? If you can't find the original source for credit then you shouldn't use it Same with aesthetics? Photography is also a type of art, and it's... Kinda bad that using images without credit or permission has been normalized. :/ Imo, I know I'd not like it if someone took my art/oc and used it to faceclaim theirs without asking first I get if someone can't draw their oc, but it's kinda worse to use/claim an image as yours when it doesn't belong to you Just my two cents

I find the “Just for fun” thing a really weak argument. What I meant by “they don’t mean any harm” is like... they don’t mean to damage the artist or disrespect them; something along those lines. Yeah it’s not right but people are ignorant about that stuff sometimes.
And I agree it’s a weird grey area. People who actually go “oh yeah this picture I made it” on other people’s works are shitty people and I think most of the time you can probably tell they didn’t make it. I don’t think disclaimers are necessary since it’s kinda implied you don’t own the image (imagine being able to draw suddenly over night lmao)
The thing about letting others use my art was a weak argument since it was anecdotal/opinionated so I’m inclined to agree with what you say
@8mefox I'm just on a weird line about it since it falls into a weird gray area. However I do think for decorative purposes (book covers whatnot) or something it should be okay, as opposed to saying the image belongs to you, but unfortunately it comes off like that in a lot of cases. I don't see many disclaimers saying the image is only a idea of what the character looks like and not the intangible image itself What you're comfortable with others using your art is your own opinion; doesn't mean others may think the same way. It's just in a gray zone people unfortunately normalized (2/2)
@8mefox To be fair, I tried to keep my own blurb as short and simple as possible so I don't overwhelm with a flood of an essay. It's mostly a reflection from the new toyhou.se rules update (something about faceclaiming and crediting moodboards and images) and I completely understand all the points you brought up. I've seen them circulate in the threads. It *does* seem to be a hassle to find every last credit for every image you use, especially if an image has been circulating the website for over years and the original photographer vanished off the face of the earth. but it's always been an unwritten rule imo, people just completely normalized just grabbing images and that's that, and that doesn't make it anymore right than it is still wrong. And you kinda prove a point it's been normalized :// But there is always the option to not use the image, or find images that explicitly are free to use. Such as sites as unsplash or something. It's perfectly okay to use something that the artist states it can be used. Otherwise I'd assume it's not for free use. I mean, I've seen the argument "it's just for fun and won't hurt anyone" being thrown around before, but again just because everyone's doing something wrong doesn't make it right. Google images is just a hub for archived images, doesn't mean they are exempt from copyright. I remember there was this thing where someone had a personal snorlax gijinka oc, and it was one of the first few results in Google images, and you can probably guess what happened (1/2)
