By definition, a Mary Sue is “a fictional character whose implausible talents and likableness weaken the story”. Most of us have gone through the heartbreaking conclusion that that one character we love so much is a Mary Sue. Often, Mary Sues happen because we want to create a character that’s relatable, likable and believable. And sometimes, in the middle of the excitement of creating such a deep, interesting person, we end up with nothing but a Mary Sue.

Don’t get me wrong: Mary Sues are just as entitled to be in a novel as any other character trope. However, they can weaken the story by making it less believable or less interesting because the character never sees true suffering or overcomes it easily.
